International Law Association – Cypriot Branch Seminar

16th Jun 2016

As a long-standing member of the International Law Association, our managing partner Dr Kypros Chrysostomides participated in its very first event on 15 June 2016 at the A.G. Leventis Gallery in Nicosia, co-hosted with the Embassy of the Kingdom of the Netherlands in Cyprus and held within the framework of the Netherlands Presidency of the Council of the European Union.

The seminar provided an excellent opportunity for judges, lawyers, scholars and students of international law to learn about current issues of international law. It was divided in three panels:

  1. Public International Law and the European Law, with speeches from Liesbeth Lijnzaad (Head of International Law Division and Legal Advisor at Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs) and Dr Kypros Chrysostomides.
  2. The contribution of tribunals in The Hague in furthering international dispute settlement, with speeches by Prof Dr Willem van Genugten (University of Tilburg and Chair of the Royal Netherlands Society of International Law) and Georghios M Pikis (former Judge at the International Criminal Court).
  3. Business and Human Rights & Corporate Social Responsibility, with speeches by H.E. Ambassador. Kees van Baar (Human Rights Ambassador, Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs) and Tara L. Van Ho, J.D., Ph.D., (Project Associate, Essex Business and Human Rights Project and Post-doctoral researcher, INTRAlaw, Aarhus University).

The International Law Association was founded in 1873 and today it numbers more than 50 Branches worldwide. As of 12 May 2016, the Cypriot Branch of the International Law Association was officially founded. More information can be found here.
