Self-regulation is becoming increasingly important for the video games industry.
As regulatory scrutiny around consumer protection and digital safety, including the protection of minors, continues to grow worldwide and across Europe, industry-led standards such as Pan-European Game Information (PEGI) play an important role in supporting informed, proportionate and timely response.
On 14 July, CYGMA Cyprus Game Makers Association, Chrysostomides Advocates & Legal Consultants and C Business Advisors had the pleasure of hosting Dirk Bosmans , Director General of PEGI in Cyprus for a series of discussions with public-sector stakeholders and the local video games industry.
PEGI is a European age-rating system for video games used in 40 countries across Europe. The system is a part of the industry’s commitment to protect minors and to build trust with consumers by ensuring that reliable information about video game content is provided in a responsible manner.
The visit included meetings with the Deputy Ministry of Research, Innovation and Digital Policy, and other ministries, followed by a closed-door working lunch with representatives of Cyprus-based studios. The discussion focused on the regulatory challenges that games companies are facing, the importance of responsible industry practices, and the role of PEGI in ensuring timely and practical response to those challenges.
Working closely with video games, we understand how crucial the dialogue between the industry and policy makers is, especially amidst the rapidly developing local video games ecosystem and its increasing visibility as a major European video games hub. We are pleased to contribute to initiatives that strengthen this dialogue and the wider development of the digital ecosystem in Cyprus.
