Athena Mavroyiannis is an associate in the intellectual property department of the firm and works exclusively on contentious and commercial aspects of intellectual property law. Athena has an academic and professional background with a particular focus on trademarks, copyright, passing off and regulatory issues spanning telecommunications and data privacy.
Athena’s practice currently focuses on supporting our global and regional clients with the strategic protection and enforcement of their trademarks and brands in Cyprus. She advises clients across a range of different sectors, including information technology, pharmaceuticals, hospitality, media, gaming and fashion. She has assisted with a number of trademark oppositions at the Registrar of Trademarks and disputes and prosecutions in the Courts of Cyprus.
Prior to joining our firm, Athena worked in Paris at the intellectual property firm Cabinet Beau de Lomenie in the trademarks department, and then in the intellectual property department of Allen & Overy.
As part of part of the Intellectual Property Law team at the firm, Athena delivers our clients with thorough and sophisticated guidance with their intellectual property matters. She has experience in all aspects of trade mark, copyright and design registration, including, oppositions, cancellation, revocation and invalidity actions, assignments, infringements and transactions involving intellectual property. She has experience in litigation, brand protection and enforcement, intellectual property portfolio management, co-ordinating multi-jurisdictional advice and general advisory work.
As part of her contentious practice, Athena has been involved in trade mark, design right, and copyright claims. Her work has involved enforcing client rights against third parties and defending clients from third party claims. This has recently included filing and acting for a global hospitality company in relation to a major trademark infringement dispute in the District Court of Limassol Court.
In her advisory practice, Athena has dealt with issues linked to digital platforms, cloud computing and privacy matters for global digital technology companies. She is currently assisting one of the largest media companies in Cyprus launch its online digital streaming service.
Athena advises international clients from a wide range of industries on general company law and in relation to corporate compliance matters in Cyprus. She also has experience reviewing and drafting agreements, ranging from intra group agreements, joint ventures, shareholders agreements, share purchase agreements, pledges, board and shareholders resolutions, and other corporate instruments.
Athena has provided legal support to major clients, such as investment firms, a leading telecommunication company and one of the largest shipping groups in Cyprus, including deal negotiation and drafting of various complex agreements. She has also assisted with a number of due diligence procedures, involving Cyprus based entities.
Athena has knowledge and experience in assisting clients operating in the media, telecommunications, and e-commerce industries, including advising on advertising and content production (for example, publishing, TV and filmed entertainment, games, music and other audio-visual products). She also advises the firm’s clients in relation to regulatory matters for distribution and licensing for TV, online content and wireless communications, from both a media law and intellectual property perspective.
Athena is knowledgeable on data protection considerations and can assist clients at both national and EU level, including compliance with the EU General Data Protection Regulation and domestic regulations. She often reviews privacy policies, consent forms and general terms and conditions, and other data sensitive agreements.
